Saint Valentine School

Vision and Values - 1998-1999

Each year the Diocese of Pittsburgh encourages the Catholic schools to participate in a program entitled "Vision and Values." This program created by the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) is designed to encourage our Catholic schools to be based on solid values. Our curriculum, teachers, programs, management, and organizations are challendged to be distinctive from other schools.

Each of us as persons of faith must model the Gospel message by our every action and word.

"But let every teacher realize that to the greatest extent they determine whether the Catholic school can bring its goals and understandings to fruition ... let them give witness to Christ, the unique Teacher, but their lives as well as by their teachings." (Second Vatican Council, "Declaration on Education")

"The Catholic school, far more than any other must be a community whose aim is the transmission of values for living." ("The Catholic School")

From the first moment that a student sets foot in a Catholic school, he or she ought to have the impression of entering a new environment, one illuminated by the light of faith. Therefore, the Gospel value selected for emphasis at St. Valentine School during the 1998-1999 school year is RECONCILIATION.

As the faculty and administration of St. Valentine School attempt to live the Gospel value of RECONCILIATION we accept with humility our own and others' limitations as human beings. We are committed to make efforts to resolve differences as they arise in conflict situations and to model RECONCILIATION to our students.

Our PLAN OF ACTION will emphasize three main areas:

  1. INTERPERSONAL LEVEL
    • We will show respect for others (teachers, parents, students) as well as their ideas, lifestyles, personal mannerisms, cultures, etc.
    • We will foster a spirit of acceptance, tolerance, and conversion by providing opportunities for dialogue, appologies, and forgiveness.

  2. ORGANIZATIONAL LEVEL
    • Classroom procedures will exhibit a respect for individual differences.
    • Discipline policies will examine the causes of misbehavior and model RECONCILIATION between the persons involved.
    • Opportunities will be made available for the reception of the Sacrament of RECONCILIATION throughout the school year.

  3. INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL
    • Faculty will emphasize the value of RECONCILIATION in all areas of the curriculum.
    • Students will be taught techniques to express agreement or disagreement.
    • Each discipline interaction will include a discussion of RECONCILIATION.

To insure that this value of RECONCILIATION is also emphasized within the family, various communication efforts will be implemented: (announcements over the public address system, classroom discussion, hall displays, classroom bulletin boards, Newsletter, Sunday bulletins, Parish Council Meeting, Advisory Council Meeting, Long Range Planning/Development Committee Meeting, and PTG Meeting.

To assess our progress, the faculty will regularly review the PLAN OF ACTION.
