School Philosophy
St. Valentine Catholic Elementary School, located in the suburban community of
Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is comprised of a community of believers who strive
to provide a faith centered curriculum respecting the uniqueness of its members.
Our purpose for existing is to develop in our students the attitudes,
understandings, habits, and skills necessary for Christian Catholic living in
our American democratic society. We strive to make the children of our school
aware of the call to service in the community, exemplified in the message and
values of the Gospel.
Our objectives are to encourage and foster all areas of learning by attempting to
educate the total child: spiritually, mentally, morally, aesthetically, and
physically. We encourage learning experiences which will take the students into
the community and bring the community into the classroom. Of primary importance
is our commitment to prayer, values, and the development of a Catholic identity
in our members.
We work to achieve these objectives by providing a sound religious program
based on Catholic doctrine, attitudes, and values. As a community, we
participate in student liturgies, reception of the sacraments, prayer services, and seasonal
para-liturgical functions for the parish community. Academically, we provide
language arts and math instruction allowing each student to progress at his/her
own rate according to their abilities and needs. All other arts and sciences
are presented in a sequential curriculum to enhance the skills and talents of
the students, with special emphasis on peace and justice. Such gospel values which are
the fabric of tomorrow's adults.
These goals and objectives are implemented by a staff who serve as role models
for the students. Through their religious and academic certification and
continuing education, the teachers exemplify how the Christian life is to be
lived and achieved. P.T.G. activities, service projects, and programs for
students, parents, and faculty serve to involve the home, parish, and community
in our faith-centered program.
