Very Special Student of the Month” Award for
September, 2008
The St Valentine School PTG is proud to announce that
Hayley Dowd is the SVS Student of the Month for September 2008.
Congratulations to Hayley and her family. A $25 Giant Eagle gift
certificate has been presented to the 8th Grade in Hayley's name.

Here is an excerpt from one of Hayley's nominations:
One skill that some adolescents never develop is the one
that involves thinking beyond themselves. As a person and parent, therefore I
found it especially impressive that during the month of September, Hayley not
only participated in the Ovarian Cancer Walk, but recruited 5 other girls in her
8th grade class to also walk with us. Our family does this walk annually in
honor of my mother, Jean Dowd, who passed away from ovarian cancer when I was
not long past my own 8th grade year. Each year, Hayley makes sure that we are
all enrolled as a family on time and prepared for the walk. This year, she
hosted a slumber party the night before the walk for her sister Olivia & friends
Natalie, Miranda, Sammi, Jessica and Julia from 8th grade so everyone could go
together. It meant so much to her to have the support of her friends to walk
with her in honor of the grandmother she never got to meet. It was refreshing to
see all of these girls walk together during a time in their lives when quite
often, adolescents are generally more concerned with their own needs.
Here are excerpts for some of the other excellent
nominations:
she's doing great in cross country and she really
deserves to be nominated for special student of the month!!!!!
She
models
her faith by treating all, adults and students alike, as she would want to be
treated, and serves her school and parish as an altar server and cantor.
Leading the congregation in prayerful song is an amazing accomplishment for a
thirteen year old.
It is a rare thing today to find young people so willing
to be active in their church (as well as their school). It has been my privilege
to work with her as well as so many of the other Saint Valentine School students
and public school
students.
While at a meeting for new Daisy Girls Scouts and their
parents she went over to a new Daisy scout who was clinging to her Mom and tried
to make her feel more comfortable about staying and doing a craft while her Mom
went to sign her up to be a Daisy Girl Scout. I was not there the whole time but
later learned that the girl did stay to do the craft while her Mom attended the
meeting. I saw her and her Mom leaving the meeting and the girl seemed very
happy and was wearing the necklace that was part of the craft that they did.
Thank you to everyone who participated. Nominations are
accepted up to the last school day of each month. The winner is announced
at the next month's PTG Meeting.
