So Very Special Student of the Month,

February, 2009

The St Valentine School PTG is proud to announce that Jessica Muller is the SVS Student of the Month for February, 2009.  Congratulations to Jessie and her family.  A  $25 Giant Eagle gift certificate has been presented to the 8th grade in Jessica's name.

Other students nominated were:

  • Christina Didiano, 6th Grade

  • Becky Mack, Pre-School

  • The Entire 7th Grade Class

Here is an excerpt from Jessica's nominations:

Over the last few weeks, I have noticed Jessica going out of her way to do the right thing. One afternoon, after school, another student became upset, and I saw Jessica comforting her and trying to calm her. It worked. Jessica's compassion for that  other student really made a difference.

Then, at our prayer service one afternoon, the students wouldn't settle and get ready for prayer. Jessica spoke up and told them to be quiet and get ready to pray. I think that she is becoming a leader by encouraging her classmates to do the right thing.

To me, this is what the student of the month is all about. We can all do small things to make our school and our world a better place and Jessica isn't afraid to stand up for what is right
.

Jessica consistently supports the words of God through her unselfish acts. Jessica is involved in many things in her school and in her parish, to those things she is an asset because of her willingness to give from her heart. Jessica supports her school by participating in several activities. She is a stand out in Forensics, having won several first place ribbons at competitions. Her wonderful voice is heard at masses when she sings in the choir and her voice is heard also in the St Vals Student counsel where she is a representative. Jessica is a great basketball player that has helped her teams win several championships including this year and
last year's section championship and Diocesan runner up in last years playoffs.

Jessica has been a St Valentine cheerleader for 4 years and her coaches often commend her for her teamwork and willingness to help the younger cheerleaders whenever needed, often without being asked.

Jessica's involvement in our parish is one of her greatest assets. Jessica has been an altar server since the 5th grade and cantors for mass on a weekly basis.

She is always willing to pitch in whenever asked. The list of programs and functions that Jessica volunteers her time for is extensive. She not only participated in, but is a valuable asset to our parish picnic, Big Bens BBQ, Family Olympics twice a year, Super Bingo, Tuesday night bingo, Santa Brunch and any family fun event scheduled by our parish. Jessica is also the unofficial  photographer for St Valentine contemporary band "Heartbeat".

We as her parents see how much Jessica's heart is in everything she does. I'm sure that you all see Jessica wherever you see Yvette and I. Its not very often that we are in Frawley Hall planning for, carrying out, or cleaning up from an event and Jessica is not right at our side, Regardless of the time of night or day .

I waited to submit Jessica's name for this award because I've seen the past winners, all of which are truly So Very Special. Jessica is deserving of this recognition because she is consistent. I struggled to pick out one very special thing she has done but then I realized that everything she does is special and reflective of her faith and commitment to her school, parish, friends, family and community. She will always be So Very Special to Yvette and I. Perhaps you can
recognize her for the special young lady she is too.

Here are excerpts for some of the other excellent nominations:

I would like to nominate 6th grader Christina Didiano for Student of the Month for several reasons. First, she is in the starting line-up for both the JV and Varsity teams, and never complains about "too much basketball", even when she has back-to-back games. She is the first 6th grader in St. Val's history to be a starter on the Varsity basketball team. Christina is by every definition a team player on the court, plays the game with her heart, and never gets upset or angry at any call made by a referee. She's always looking to pass the ball to her team mates in the hope they have an opportunity to score. She is very humble about the fact she is the top scorer on the JV team, and among the top two scoring leaders on the Varsity team; it's more important to her how the entire team performs. She won the local Elks Hoop Shoot, but declined the opportunity to advance to the district finals because the timing conflicted with her JV Cupid Classic game. In addition to her basketball skills, she also finds time for the demanding schedule of the honors band, which she has been elected to. I'm very glad I had the opportunity to work with Christina this year, because she is not only an excellent basketball player, but she is also a tremendous young lady.

Thanks, Mark Acker, Varsity Girls Coach

Becky attends our 4 year old extended day preschool program. She always arrives at school with a big smile on her face and willing to do whatever her teachers ask of her.

She loves to help her teachers while at school. She likes to help stuff bookbags with all the papers to go home. She likes to color our birthday cards that students receive on their birthday. We call her “our teacher assistant” and one day we will have to put her on our payroll J

Another important quality of Becky’s is how she treats her fellow classmates. She always shares with others. If a child drops a toy or puzzle she will jump right up to help them pick up the pieces. She is very patient with a student who has difficulties following the classroom rules and staying on task. She will help this student stay on task.

The (8) 7th graders were very instrumental in the planning, decorating, and gift

wrapping for the 8th grade recognition at Neil Armstrong. Other parents also know of other things this class has been helpful with. I will encourage them to also nominate them for the other reasons.

Thank you to everyone who participated. Nominations are accepted up to the last school day of each month.  The winner is announced at the next month's PTG Meeting.
