St. Valentine School Gets in the Game With Religious Board Games

The mid-March snow meant another day of indoor recess for the students of St. Valentine School. It also meant a chance for the students to pull out the latest board games – nothing you could purchase in any store, though. These board games were designed by the 4th, 6th, and 7th grade students themselves as part of an assignment and aren’t just any type of board games. These board games all revolve around the Catholic faith.

“By designing their own board games, I hoped the students would discover a new joy in studying their faith history”, says Ms. Mary Pakutinskas, religion teacher for these 4th, 6th, and 7th graders at St. Valentine, who gave the assignment.

The games are as diverse as the students themselves and range from “Flight from Egypt” and “Theological Trivia” to “Deeds and Sins” and “The Nazarene.” Many are based on traditional board games, such as Sorry or Monopoly but are designated “The Sacrament Version” or called “Christopoly.” No matter what the format, the questions involved in the games help the creators and the players strengthen their knowledge of the Roman Catholic faith. The games are being used by the current classes of St. Valentine students and will remain with the classroom teacher for future classes to use, as well.

“My students never cease to amaze me with their creativity,” says Ms. Pakutinskas. “The games are worthy of mass production. Hopefully, they will continue to inspire students of the future to delve deeper into their faith.
