Saint Valentine SchoolPress Release - November 13, 2001FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 11, 2001 is now indelibly marked in the memories of Americans forevermore. As our nation grapples with how to deal with the terrorism facing our world, students and staff at St. Valentine School in Bethel Park have faced the tragedy with daily prayers, remembrance at weekly Mass, and donations. On the one-month anniversary of the terrorist attach, the school sponsored a dress down day to benefit Catholic Charities' efforts to help victims and their families. Students and staff donated money in order to opt out of wearing uniforms and, instead, participate in a red, white, and blue dress down day. The event raised $278.90, and the St. Valentine Student Council contributed another $200 for a total contribution of close to $500.00. On the two-month anniversary, which coincided with Veterans' Day, the school held a special prayer service to honor veterans on Monday, November 12. As part of the prayer service, special guest speaker Dr. Fred Scherrer from the Veterans fo Foreign Wars addressed students. In addition, Boy Scouts from Pack 225 -- eighth graders David Lammie, Timothy Mills, Brandon Koenig, and Peter Haywiser -- conducted a flag ceremony.
