PTG DATES10/12 PTG Meeting - Newman House - 7:30 P.M.10/12 Articles for Newsletter Due to Mrs. Fleet 10/13 PTG Family Bingo - Frawley Hall - 6:30 P.M. 10/26 Brown Envelope Stuffing 10/28 Night at the Races (Long Range Planning Event) - Frawley Hall President's MessageWe had busy months in August/September. The PTG hosted an in-service lunch for the faculty, provided a popsicle treat for Preschool-8, coordinated refreshments for Curriculum Night, provided refreshments for parents/guardians during the preschool abbreviated sessions, finalized the majority of our committees, kicked off our membership drive and fall fundraiser, and held our first meeting at which time the budget was passed for 2000-2001.We had well over 30 members in attendance for our first meeting. At one point it was standing room only. I hope we continue to have this type of turnout. The meeting was lively and the debate spirited. Plan to come out to the October meeting so as not to miss the excitement. My continued thanks go out to the committee chair(s) and volunteers for their efforts during this busy time. Additional thanks to our PTG officers who participated in a myriad of activities to help facilitate these events. While we have “hit the ground running”, we must keep the momentum going through October. I hope that we have a tremendous response to the request for volunteers for the PTG Family Bingo. I am sure it will be great fun. A personal note of thanks and congratulations to all those who helped plan, execute and participate in the surprise that was perpetrated on your PTG President at September's meeting. Whoever said you can not keep a secret in the PTG? Thanks to all members for their response to the membership drive and the fall fundraiser. PTG MEETING Please contact me prior to any meeting if you wish to have any new business items placed on the meeting agenda. The next PTG meeting is scheduled for October 12, 2000, 7:30 P.M. at Newman House. Babysitting service will be provided. CHAIRPERSONS MUST SUBMIT A MONTHLY REPORT, EITHER IN PERSON OR IN WRITING, FOR EACH MONTHLY MEETING. Liaison Committee Update I want to clarify my intent in the creation of the liaison committee. It is not my intent to stifle debate at the regular monthly meeting. My intent was to create an entity, the committee, which could take issues or requests, which could require several hours of debate and/or several hundred, if not thousands of dollars of PTG funds, and investigate and debate the merits of the particular idea or request outside of the regular monthly meeting. I know that every member's time is extremely valuable and that not every member has the flexibility to spend several hours in debate and have nothing possibly come to an accomplished conclusion. Therefore, the intent of the committee is for it to be comprised of individuals who would meet and discuss items rationally or investigate the requirements or merits of proposals when necessary, possibly for several hours, and come up with recommendations in the form of a motion or motions for the next regular monthly meeting to be discussed and voted on by the general membership. The intent of the committee is not to be a complaining session. It is to be one of an exchange of ideas for the good of all SVS children. As with any new idea, it is still in the growing stage and I do not have all of the answers. I ask that the membership give this idea a chance. Additionally, the Liaison Committee was not intended to replace what St. Val's parents might have known as the School Advisory Council (CORE Team). Also, my intent was not to prevent parents or guardians from going directly to Mrs. Fleet with any questions or concerns. As always you may discuss any of this with any other PTG officer or me.
Thank you. BABYSITTING AT PTG MEETINGSBabysitting is available in the Preschool during PTG meetings for parents who would not be able to attend our meetings otherwise. Older students from St. Val's will be providing their services to watch your children. We ask that you please do not bring infants for sitting as not all of our students may be able to handle them. Also, it is suggested that children over six years old bring along their own activity to occupy their time. Thanks to all of the students who offered to help with this valuable service. Ten seventh and eighth graders signed up for numerous days, practically filling our entire schedule from September through May. Hopefully, these students will be kept busy as parents drop off their children to attend our meetings. Due to the great response to sitters, students may not be needed for each day they requested. All those who signed up should have already received a letter from me regarding their schedule. Please let me know if you signed up and did not receive a letter. I will notify students by phone if any necessary changes occur. Thank you. Lorraine SCHOOL PROGRAMSOctober's assembly will be presented to our school by West Penn AAA. Beverly Norris, the program's safety advisor, will be on hand to discuss safety issues with our children. The students in grades kindergarten to four will focus on a Halloween safety program, while grades five to eight will talk about general auto and pedestrian safety, as well as Halloween tips. This is a free program. Please do not forget to send in your Shop N Save receipts for a later program. If you like, you may send receipts to Cindy Keady, c/o Chelsea, Room 4-9. Also, anyone interested in helping to tally those receipts may contact me at 831-9770. Thank you. Lorraine "APPLES FOR THE STUDENTS" PROGRAM BEGINSThis year our goal for Giant Eagle's "Apples For The Students" Program is to collect $550,000.00 in register tapes. Last year our school collected $534,000.00 in Giant Eagle register tapes. This was certainly quite an accomplishment! We received a 27" stereo color TV for the computer lab, six 25" color TV/VCR combinations for the classrooms, a physical science kit, and a Bigens 40" ball.Of course, the more register tapes we collect, the more our children's learning environment will be enriched through our partnership with Giant Eagle. With a friendly competition between our homeroom classes, and with help from our friends, relatives, and co-workers, we are sure we will meet our goal. To be eligible, the cash register tapes must be dated between October 8, 2000 and February 24, 2001. Please send your register tapes in to school weekly with your child. If we reach our goal of $550,000.00 in cash register tapes, the classroom with the most dollars in register tapes per student, collected by the end of the program, will be awarded a pizza party. Additionally, when we reach our goal of $550,000.00 the entire school will be entitled to a free "Dress Down Day." Thank you for your support!
