Saint Valentine School

Little Dribblers, the group of 56 young basketball performers from St. Valentine School in Bethel Park, is taking its show on the road. And it's a pretty impressive forum. On January 20, 2001, the first, second, and third graders will perform at halftime of the women's basketball game pitting the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Connecticut. They will entertain the crowd with their mix of “V” dribbling, figure eights, popcorn dribbling, the corkscrew, and other ball handling drills.

The Little Dribblers' inaugural performance on the road will not only be at the collegiate level, it will be at the top of the collegiate level of play. The University of Pittsburgh's Lady Panthers are coached by last year's Big East Women's Coach of the Year, Traci Waites, while the University of Connecticut took the crown as last year's Women's NCAA champion.

“The Little Dribblers program was begun to help build interest of the game in the lower grades, before structured play formally begins,” says Rob Schaeffer, the parent volunteer who heads up the program. “It's actually patterned after the “Little Panthers” at the University of Pittsburgh and the “Little Hawks” at Bethel Park High School, so it's nice to be invited to perform at the University of Pittsburgh.”

The University of Pittsburgh Lady Panthers versus the University of Connecticut Huskies takes place on January 20, 2001 at 2:00 P.M. at Fitzgerald Fieldhouse on Pitt's campus in Oakland. Little Dribblers also perform at halftime of various regularly scheduled home games for the St. Valentine School boys' and girls' teams.
