Saint Valentine SchoolPress Release - September 29, 2000FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Golden Apple Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Diocese of Pittsburgh to its teachers. Each year, the Diocese selects only ten individuals to receive this award for excellence in education. When students at St. Valentine School in Bethel Park recently returned from summer vacation, they returned to find three Golden Apple Awardees in their midst. St. Valentine School's most recent winner, Mrs. Kathy Polley, won the award and its $5,000.00 cash prize most recently at a ceremony presided by Bishop Donald Wuerl. Mrs. Polley is a kindergarten teacher in the morning and, in the afternoon, switches gears and teaches math in the middle school program. Mrs. Mary Steedle, who returned to St. Valentine School this year after taking a year off to explore other career paths, won the award in 1997. She is a science teacher in the middle school program and takes an active lead in the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science Program (PJAS). St. Valentine School's principal, Mrs. Diane M. Fleet, also has received a Golden Apple Award. She was nominated for the award in her previous post at St. Clare of Assisi School in Clairton.
