Saint Valentine Church

Lectors: Format

PLEASE READ TO REFRESH YOUR RECOLLECTION, THANK YOU!!!!!!

All Lectors should arrive 10 to 15 minutes before Mass in the sacristy through the back door.

While waiting for Mass to begin, refresh yourself with the readings in the Lectionary that you have already studied -  Relax and visit with the Priest and altar servers.

If there are pre-Mass announcements, try to make them about 2 minutes prior to the start of Mass (before the bells ring if possible).

      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Process out in front of the Priest

Just before reaching the altar step to your left to leave room for the Priest to come forward -- all genuflect or bow together

Lector goes to the Left of the Altar - Stop near podium facing the altar while Priest kisses altar

As Priest turns - Go to your chair and stand for the beginning of Mass

After the Opening Prayer congregation responds "Amen" - Lector proceeds to podium while Priest and congregation are sitting. Open Lectionary to readings and begin -- (Do not tell us that this is the First Reading)

(Please remember to read slowly, loudly, enunciate your words and get the message that is in the reading across to the congregation the best way you know how)

Remember – the ending to the First Reading is "The Word of the Lord" only. DO NOT say "This is"!

When you are finished with the First Reading return to your chair and be seated for the Responsorial Psalm which is done by the organist

After the Responsorial Psalm is finished return to the podium and read the Second Reading -- (Do not tell us that this is the Second Reading)

(Please remember to read slowly, loudly, enunciate your words and get the message that is in the reading across to the congregation the best way you know how)

Remember – the ending to the Second Reading is "The Word of the Lord" only. DO NOT say "This is"!

When finished return to your chair and if Priest is standing - stand; if Priest is sitting - sit - (PLEASE do not pre-empt the Priest at this point, or at any point of the Mass)

Stand for the Gospel Acclamation and Gospel - Be seated for the Homily

When Priest returns to celebrant chair, if he stands you stand, if he sits you remain sitting

Stand for the Profession of Faith - After small opening prayer for the Intentions, Priest will make a slight pause - Lector proceeds to podium to deliver intentions

(Please pronounce names slowly and as correctly as you can)

After you finish with the Intentions REMAIN at the podium until the closing prayer is finished - When we all say "Amen", Lector returns to his/her chair

Lector remains sitting during Offertory Hymn, Collection and beginning of Offertory Prayers

When Priest says "Pray, brethren, etc." Lector and congregation respond with "May the Lord accept, etc. all his church" Lector stands right after the word CHURCH

Then Lector proceeds down the stairs and next to altar server and kneels. If a physical disability prevents you from comfortably kneeling during the Consecration, you may sit.

Lector remains kneeling (or sitting) during Consecration of Mass - When we all respond Amen to the prayer "Through Him, In Him and With Him, etc." - Lector Stands

Lector remains standing for the our Father, the next prayer, "Deliver us, Lord, from every evil etc." -- When the Priest offers the Sign of Peace the Lector shakes hands with altar server and proceeds up to the altar to shake hands with the Priest

If Lector is going to receive communion he/she returns down the steps to kneel with the altar servers. After the Lay Ministers are finished receiving communion, go with the altar servers off the altar to stand in line to receive communion.  If you are not receiving communion, continue to kneel

When Communion is over and the Priest returns to the celebrant chair the Lector gets up and goes toward his/her chair - If Priest sits, Lector sits; If Priest stands, Lector stands

The Lector should leave the altar with the Priest. You will all go to the bottom of the altar and genuflect or bow together - Lector will process behind the altar servers and in front of the Priest back to the sacristy

PLEASE REMEMBER

Speak into the microphone and talk to the people in the back of the church and the people back in the areas where the confessionals are - if these people can hear you then everyone will - You will probably have to lean into the microphone in order to be heard

Try to use some eye contact during the readings or intentions

Please speak slowly, enunciate your words and communicate the message that is in the readings to the congregation

THE LECTOR SHOULD BE LEADING THE CONGREGATION AT ALL TIMES WITH THE ANSWERS TO THE PRAYERS AND WITH THE STANDING OR SITTING OR KNEELING.
