Saint Valentine Church
Lectors: Dress Code
The lector is entrusted with the crucial task of making the word of God come alive by proclaiming it for the Catholic congregation. The focus of the members of the congregation should be on the Scripture, not on the appearance of the lector. Lectors should dress respectfully and with decorum. Clothing that is too casual or too flamboyant will distract the congregation from the message of the Scripture.
For men, appropriate attire would include either a suit or conservative sports jacket and dress slacks. For women, appropriate attire would include dresses, skirts and blouses (or sweaters) and suits, either with skirts or pants. Dresses and skirts should be modest in length, with a suggested length of no more than 2 inches above the knee. A modest neckline is recommended for dresses, sweaters and blouses. Clothing for both men and women should fit comfortably and not be formfitting or tight.
For daily liturgies and liturgies where the congregation is casually dressed (such as Sunday evening), the lector dress can be somewhat more casual, but should still adhere to the general conservative modest principles described above. For example, men might choose to wear dress slacks and shirt or sweater.
